In 2019, data from Tribhuvan International Airport indicated that domestic airline firms were scheduling around fifty flights to Lukla daily during the busiest trekking periods.

The issue of high air traffic arose due to TIA accommodating both domestic and internal flights. Delays of up to 2 hours were causing inconvenience for passengers as well as the airport.

To address this, the Nepal government opted to reroute flights from Kathmandu to Ramechhap instead of directly flying to Lukla during peak seasons.

Lukla Overview

Lukla, located in the northeastern Nepal region of Solukhumbu District, is a well-visited town near Mount Everest. Positioned at an elevation of 2,860 meters (9,383 ft), it boasts a small airport and various facilities, such as shops and lodges that cater to trekkers with western-style meals and trail supplies.

It typically takes two days to travel from Lukla to Namche Bazaar village for altitude acclimatization. In August 2014, there were discussions about constructing the first tarmac road from Kathmandu to Lukla by the Nepalese government.

Ramechhap Airport in Manthali

Ramechhap Airport is becoming a popular choice for trekkers heading to Everest Base Camp as it offers a more convenient route to access Lukla. Manthali, located about 132 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu, serves as the administrative center of the Ramechhap District.

The airport sits in the Tamakoshi River Valley at an elevation of 474 meters above sea level and provides scenic views of the river during take-off and landing.

The journey from Kathmandu to Ramechhap takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, requiring travelers to leave as early as 1 am in order to catch an early morning flight. The flight itself from Ramechhap to Lukla lasts around 20 minutes.

Although Ramechhap is only 83 kilometers away from Kathmandu, due to Nepal's terrain, the road distance extends to 145 km with a travel time averaging around four hours.

The Benefit of Flying from Ramechhap

Flights from Kathmandu to Lukla are directed to Ramechhap due to heavy traffic and an influx of tourists during peak seasons. The major tourist seasons in Nepal occur in Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November).

Traveling from Ramechhap will add around 5 hours to your journey, which may seem inconvenient at first, but there are several advantages.

  • Flying from Ramechhap is more cost-effective compared to flights from Kathmandu. The one-way airfare for a foreigner departing from Kathmandu is approximately USD 220, whereas the fare from Ramechhap is USD 180.
  • Manthali Airport in Ramechhap can quickly resume operations when the weather clears up as it exclusively handles Lukla flights. This increases the likelihood of reaching Lukla on time.
  • Managing flight cancellations and delays becomes easier since Ramechhap solely operates Lukla flights and avoids creating backlogs.
  • Besides being closer to Lukla than Kathmandu, the flight duration from Ramechhap is roughly 20 minutes. Despite having a limited number of aircraft, more flights can operate under favorable weather conditions.

When traveling from Ramechhap to Lukla, you won't need extra days added to your itinerary; however, you'll have departures as early as 2 am to catch a flight. If avoiding disruption is important, consider traveling to Ramechhap a day prior and staying at a hotel overnight.

In the peak Everest trekking months, regular helicopter flights are available for both group sharing and private charter. Each flight can accommodate a maximum of 5 people or up to 500 kg.

Helicopter flights from Kathmandu to Lukla provide a popular and convenient alternative with minimal concerns about delays or cancellations.
